How Our Guests Beat the Yosemite Entrance Rush

Jun 16, 2026Hotel Information, Yosemite National Park

If there’s one Yosemite tip our front desk team shares more than any other, it’s this: The easiest way to avoid long entrance lines is to stay close to the park. Many visitors spend 30 minutes to 2 hours driving to Yosemite before they even reach an entrance station. By the time they arrive, parking lots are filling up and popular viewpoints are already crowded.

Guests at Yosemite View Lodge and Yosemite Cedar Lodge have a different experience. Located just two minutes from Yosemite’s Arch Rock Entrance on Highway 140, they can enjoy breakfast, grab a coffee, and still be among the first visitors entering the park.

Our Staff’s Recommended Arrival Time

During spring, summer, and holiday weekends, our team typically recommends entering Yosemite before 8:00 AM. Guests who leave the lodge around 7:00 to 7:30 AM often enjoy:

  • Shorter entrance lines
  • Easier parking in Yosemite Valley
  • Cooler temperatures
  • Better wildlife viewing
  • Less crowded trails and viewpoints

The Parking Problem Most Visitors Don’t Expect

The entrance gate isn’t usually the biggest challenge. Finding parking in Yosemite Valley can take longer than getting through the entrance itself. Arriving early helps guests secure parking near popular attractions like:

  • Lower Yosemite Fall
  • Yosemite Village
  • Cook’s Meadow
  • Yosemite Valley Visitor Center

Once parking lots fill, visitors may spend valuable vacation time searching for a space.

Visit Midweek

If your schedule allows, plan your Yosemite Valley day for Tuesday through Thursday. Weekdays are often noticeably less crowded than weekends, especially during peak travel seasons.

Don’t Rush Through Yosemite

Many first-time visitors try to see everything in a single day. Our staff usually recommends the opposite. By staying multiple nights, you can enjoy an early park day, then take a slower pace the next morning without feeling like you’re missing out.  That’s one of the biggest advantages of staying just outside the park entrance.

The Bottom Line

Beating the Yosemite entrance rush isn’t about waking up before sunrise. It’s about giving yourself a head start. When you’re staying just two minutes from the Arch Rock Entrance, it’s much easier to enter before the crowds, find parking, and spend more time enjoying Yosemite instead of sitting in traffic. That’s why so many of our returning guests choose Yosemite View Lodge or Yosemite Cedar Lodge as their basecamp for exploring the park.
